On its 10th year anniversary, the Osteoporosis Awareness Society of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (OASKLS) in Malaysia is stronger than ever, with extensive outreach and important collaborations to raise awareness of osteoporosis.

IOF was delighted when OASKL answered its call for patient portraits and stories to help raise awareness of osteoporosis for the 2019 World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) campaign. The society submitted the beautiful photograph and impactful story of Madam Lo Lan Yen, a 77-year old patient who sustained a hip fracture following a minor fall in her home.  Madam Lo tells how she overcame pain and agony after sustaining the hip fracture and how important the support she received from everyone has been vital in helping her to achieve the good functional outcome she now enjoys. Madam Lo Lan Yen’s story appears in the 2019 WOD “Patient’s Story” section and has been shared with people from all over the world.

OASKLS “Healthy Bone for Life Campaign”

2019 marks a very special year for OASKLS. This is OASKL’s 10th year Anniversary and the society can look back on a successful record (even without regular financial support) in which it managed to organize the “Healthy Bone for Life” campaigns in different part of Malaysia.  That included campaigns in the states of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kelantan, Perlis, Johor and also the states of Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia.  This year, OASKLS organized its campaign in the state of Pahang on the 12th of October 2019.  The next campaign will be held in Kuala Lipis on the 28th of October 2019.  OASKL has been fortunate that over the past many years, some industrial partners have supported its activities, even with small amounts of financial support.  Thanks to this support the society was able to print the “Healthy Bone for Life Family Guidebook” in three languages - Bahasa Malaysia, English and Chinese.  The Family Guidebooks were given away for free during each campaign.

During the campaigns, members of the public above 50 years of age were enrolled and went through height and weight measurement, calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI), OSTA scoring, IOF One-Minute Risk Test, Ultrasound screening as well as FRAX Scoring.  They then went through counselling by medical doctors or qualified personnel based on the above assessments.  Advice on their risk of osteoporosis and fractures, as well as dietary and physical activity was provided.  Those at risk were advised to proceed with DXA scan in local hospitals.  All those who went through the assessments, as well as their family members, were given a copy of “OASKLS Healthy Bone for Life Family Guidebook”.  Talks on osteoporosis, fragility fractures, fall and fall prevention were conducted concurrently.  Demonstrations on physical exercises and appropriate methods of handling elderly persons with fragility fractures were also carried out.

In summary, OASKL’s World Osteoporosis Day activities in 2019 included:
• Fragility Fracture Masterclass 2019, Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA), Kuantan, Pahang on the 11th of October 2019
• Healthy Bone for Life, Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia 12th October 2019
• Healthy Bone for Life, Kuala Lipis, Pahang, Malaysia 28th October 2019

OASKLS and Fragility Fracture Network of Malaysia (FFNM) Collaboration

OASKLS was established with a main mission to raise awareness of osteoporosis among the public in general.  The council members of OASKLS comprise: orthopedic surgeon, geriatrician, lawyer, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, community pharmacist and retired matron.  The Fragility Fracture Network of Malaysia (FFNM) aims to raise awareness among doctors and paramedics on the importance of the “Three Pillars” of fragility fracture management which includes the “Post-fracture Acute Care”, “Post-fracture Treatment Rehabilitation” and “Secondary Fracture Prevention Program/Capture the Fracture program”.  The council members of FFNM consist of orthopedic surgeon, geriatricians, emergency medicine physician, rehabilitation medicine physician and physiotherapist.

OASKLS and FFNM have established an official partnership which allows the organizations to collaborate and work together to raise awareness on osteoporosis and related fragility fractures among the public, allied healthcare professionals (nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists) and doctors.

Just as OASKLS organized the “Healthy Bone for Life” Campaign for the public in Kuantan and Kuala Lipis in the state of Pahang this year, FFNM also worked with OASKLS in organizing the “Fragility Fracture Management Masterclass” for doctors and allied healthcare professionals in the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA), the General Hospital of the state of Pahang. With support from the State Government, other state Non-Profit Governmental Organizations as well as some volunteers (Rehabilitation Team and Nurses), three events were planned and organized successfully this year.

IOF thanks  Dr Lee Joon-Kiong, OASKL Vice-President and Vice President FFNM for providing this report on activities.

IOF CEO Philippe Halbout stated:

We congratulate OASKL for their outstanding work this past decade and thank them for their valuable support of IOF programmes and the World Osteoporosis Day campaign. We wish OASKL continued success in the future.”
